This month we are offering Dungeons & Dragons programming for more age groups—tweens (10-13), teens, and adults! Check out the program listings below. Additionally, we’re launching some open shop maker hours this month as well. And finally, back by popular demand, is an update about Obie!
Family Programs
All events are in-person unless otherwise indicated.
Pajama Story Time
Wednesdays, February 1, 8, 15, 22 from 6:30 PM to 7:00 PM
Put on your pajamas and bring your favorite stuffed animal to this story time for some fun stories, songs and rhymes. For ages 0 to 5 with their caregivers. Space limitations may apply.
Improv Club
Thursdays, February 2, 9, 16, 23 from 4:00 PM to 5:15 PM
Join us for a five-week improv theater program. Find characters, build environments and create scenes from scratch. Be a part of an ensemble. Have fun! We meet once a week to learn and practice improv games, techniques and skills. Week five is a performance for friends and family at Bughouse Theater, a nearby non-profit improv venue. There is no experience necessary, but please note that each session builds on the previous one. Registration for this program assumes a commitment to all five weeks. For kids in 4th through 7th grades. Please register online.
Story Time
Tuesday, February 7, 14, 21 from 9:30 AM to 10:00 AM and 10:30 AM to 11:00 AM
Join our story time for toddlers and preschoolers! We’ll share about 30 minutes of songs, rhymes and books. Space is limited to those in line when doors open approximately 5 to 10 minutes before the program begins, until capacity is reached. The program repeats at 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. For ages 1 1/2 to 5 with a caregiver. Space limitations may apply.
Baby Bookworms
Tuesday, February 7, 14, 21 from 10:00 AM to 10:30 AM
Join our children's librarians for this special 25-minute story time for babies and their caregivers. We’ll share songs, rhymes and books while helping to build baby’s early literacy and social-emotional skills. For children birth to 18 months and their caregivers. D&D Club
Tuesday, February 7, 14, 21, 28 from 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM
Too young for our popular Teen D&D programs? The D&D Club is for ages 10-13 who are interested in playing tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs). We’ll be playing short games that last 1-2 sessions and have easy-to-follow rules. Please register online.
LEGO® Club
Wednesday, February 8 from 4:30 PM to 5:15 PM
Calling all LEGO® enthusiasts and engineers! Our children’s librarians will offer guidance as we take on building challenges and do some open-ended free play. Join us to make new friends while building STEAM skills. For ages 4-12.

How to Give Your Child a Smart Start: A Workshop for Parents and Caregivers

Give your baby a smart start! Maya Smart, author of Reading for Our Lives, will describe how reading unfolds from birth through the early elementary years and outline what caregivers can do to nurture it at each stage. You will leave armed with information about the six parent levers for literacy success, plus easy and research-based ways to nurture your child’s language and literacy development from the start. Chicago Public Library staff will facilitate an active play space for children and a caregiver before, during and after the presentation to demonstrate early literacy skills in action! Women’s Clothing Swap
Saturday, February 18th from 11:00AM to 3:00PM
Out with the old, in with the new—to you, that is! Refresh your wardrobe at Sulzer’s first Women’s Clothing Swap. Find your new favorite outfit and give your gently used clothes a new home. Please make sure items are clean and in reasonably good condition before bringing them to share. You can bring up to 20 items to contribute. You may take home as many items as you contributed. We will have tables set up and clothing arranged by size. All women's size clothing is welcome.
Stitch ‘N Fix

The Life We Bury

This month the Sulzer Regional Library will be reading The Life We Bury by Allen Eskens. College student Joe Talbert has the modest goal of completing a writing assignment for an English class. His task is to interview a stranger and write a brief biography of the person. He meets Carl Iverson, a dying Vietnam veteran--and a convicted murderer. With only a few months to live, he has been medically paroled to a nursing home. As Joe writes about Carl's life, especially Carl's valor in Vietnam, he cannot reconcile the heroism of the soldier with the despicable acts of the convict. Joe throws himself into uncovering the truth, but by the time Joe discovers the truth, it is too late to escape the fallout.

It feels like an eternity, but only two years have passed in this mortal realm since Obliteros was transferred into his current containment. He spawns new life, in the form of a child as well as vegetation. Soon the entire library will succumb to his nature.
